The Grand Canyon is one of the seven wonders of the natural world. It was discovered in 1540 by the Spanish explorer, Don Lopez de Cardenas who was a captain in Coronado’s expedition. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Arizona and brings in visitors from around the world. President Benjamin Harrison established the Grand Canyon Forest Reserve in 1893 and then in 1908 the Grand Canyon was declared a national monument by Theodore Roosevelt under the Antiquities Act. It was in 1919 that Congress established The Grand Canyon as a National Park.
The canyon is 280 miles long and over one-mile deep. The Grand Canyon covers a land mass of almost 2,000 square miles. You can see the Colorado River below the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The Colorado River flows west through the canyon and finally turns south and empties into the Gulf of California in Mexico. The Colorado River averages over 300 feet wide and 100 feet deep.
